The Black Belt Guide to Writers: Health is now available!
Just click on the STORE button to the left.

A while ago, I was approached by publisher and writer Cyn Mobley. She asked me if I'd consider writing a guide book to help her and her stable of writers avoid common health problems. Now, you wouldn't think that writing is a particularly dangerous occupation, but you'd be wrong. The lifestyle leads to all sorts of chronic conditions: joint problems, insomnia, malnutrition, other things you'd never even think of. The circulation problems alone can be life-threatening. At the very least, all of the potential conditions impair productivity.

The result, after numerous draft flying back and forth, is 30+ pages packed with information I've gleaned over the decades. Supplements, exercises, other natural and alternative treatment possibilities -- not general thoughts like you'd see in other articles but specific recommendations to discuss with your licensed health care practioner. Writers -- and programmers and web designers, too! -- this is what you need to know to stay healthy.

On OTC products for Menopause
Toni McSorley

Understanding what an OTC product is designed to do is a crucial aspect in deciding what products (if any) are suitable for each individual.  As in other areas of health, no two women are the same where menopause symptoms are concerned, and any product must be aimed at their particular symptoms.  Shotgun approaches are rarely successful.

Owl Wisdom Seminars  E-mail
Written by Toni McSorley

The first question I always get is, "Why do you call your program Owl Wisdom?"

Owls eat instinctively.  You'll never see one munching on a candy bar or washing a donut down with a cup of coffee.  They know what fuel their body is built to run on, and that's what they consistently consume.

Humans are different.  We're bombarded with advertisements and temptations that pull us away from what we would instinctively eat if our taste buds were not spoiled or our body not corrupted by addictions to things such as caffeine.  In this fast, large, processed culture, we need help to get back in touch with our bodies.  We need to reacquire the wisdom the Owls always have, and learn how to nourish our bodies in a way that allows us the best health and longevity.

Women's Health  E-mail
Written by Toni McSorley
How healthy is the United States perspective on women? The Annotico report from May, 2007, notes that the World Health Organization study on longevity reveals the United States ranks 32nd in the world for women, well behind countries such as Italy, France and Spain. My conclusion is that the current view of desirability in  women’s bodies has caused a decline in the well-being of women since Twiggy began the anorexic look of the 1960’s.

In Defense of Women  E-mail
Written by Toni McSorley
If a terrorist walked down the streets of our country killing citizens,  there is no doubt that heaven and earth would be moved to stop him.  TV and radio stations would be giving up-to-the-minute coverage and every newspaper would be blaring headlines concerned with the crisis.
Yet violence is perpetrated upon a portion of our population every day and, for the most part, it is treated with silence.  Every day in the United States of America, someone’s daughter, wife, mother, sister goes missing or is found dead.  Every day women are kidnapped, assaulted, beaten, raped and murdered.  Every day!

Kombucha Tea and Chronic Illness  E-mail
Written by Toni McSorley

When I was working hard to recover from a chronic immune-system deficiency, my naturopath recommended that I obtain and cultivate  Kombucha tea.  Although I looked at him with my forehead creased up, I was willing to do anything I needed to recover my health.  Thus began my relationship with the Manchurian Mushroom, or Kombucha tea.

Women's Self Defense Seminar  E-mail
Written by Toni McSorley
The next EZ self-defense seminar will be the morning of November 1, 2008, at the Arts of the Samurai, in Knoxville, TN.  These seminars are so close to my heart. I know they make a difference by keeping so many women out of danger and, when prevention fails, giving them the techniques they need to survive. I'll be blogging on this later. In a study reported by Associated Press, half the weight of some breakfast cereals was shown to be sugar.  Parents, read the labels of your child’s cereal before you bring it home.
